Well, someone's got to kick these threads off and it might as well be me...

There's ten top quality teams vying for one Championship place, or failing that, seven places that don't involve relegating so they can have another go next season. Some interesting teams in the mix these year, some new, some old, some ancient!

* * * * * * *

Weasels: Definitely in the ancient category, we won this thing again last season. We seem to do well every third season so it might be too much to ask us to win it again straight away, but if we start the way we did last time, and keep up our weird away form, you never know.

Seattle Seahawks: Double Champions and Cup winners. Made a superb late challenge to the title last season, and have been one of the first teams to make the rushing game work. With their passing game back to full strength as well they have got to be strong contenders again.

MeLittleMenOnThePitchLetchworthGardenCity: The former champions had an impressive return to the top flight last season, finishing third eventually. Have also made the rushing game work on occasion. This season they look to be doubling up the player roles, which will save money and enable them to be totally montrous in all positions.

UL Vikings: The season 25 champions had a terrible start last season and an amazing finish, winning seven Top Div games in a row to climb from bottom to 4th, and also made an Iron Bowl appearance to cap things off. Can they improve on this? Well if they carry on in this form they'll be looking at extending their trophy cabinet.

Plymouth Pilgrims: Runners up in season 25 and 5th last season, Plymouth will be relying on their rookie QB, Chas Crowe, to liven things up in their offence. I've not scouted Chas, but if he matures quickly this season, we can expect Plymouth to be up there.

Elisa Vikings: Former Cup finalists and AFLC contenders, Elisa Vikings' league performances so far have enabled them to stay in the Top Division, although they will surely be looking to improve on this, as their all-Finnish team is beginning to mature into an outfit that looks ready to make a big challenge.

Fionia Swans: Fionia's succession of mid-table finishes belies their potential - on paper this is one of the strongest teams out there. They can beat anyone on their day, so if the team can put together a consistent run, they certainly have the ability to take the title.

Bigfoot: Have been here (and nearly done it) before - they nearly won the title in season 22, before an undeserved relegation in season 23. They did a total clear-out and went all the way down to division III.2 before promoting straight back up again, having bought some very useful veterans on the transfer market. They are the highest paid team in the top division.

Traujin's Pros: Made an amazing 17-1 league campaign in division II.2 to promote comfortably last season, having barely missed out the season before, and should have no troubles settling in at the top flight. Their manager has also been very active with stat collecting, which may give them an edge in this highly competitive division.

Scandinavian Nightmare: Making their third appearance in the top flight, having collected the set of division 2 trophies with a very impressive 16-2 record. They've relegated on both their previous top flight challenges, but it's looking like third time lucky, as their team looks well prepared for the season ahead.

* * * * * * *

Again I would expect a blindfolded octopus would have a better chance of picking the winner out of this lot. For my money, Traujin's Pros, Seattle, and Fionia are probably the strongest contenders, but it's really anyone's guess.

Good luck to all managers this year.Last edited on 2018-08-08 at 20:27

Good write up AbCat. Is this the toughest lineup of teams in the top division? I can't pick out any weak team. I think whoever wins the title this year will have truly earned it. Good luck to everyone this season. Let the battle begin

I don’t think there are any rebuilding. If you look at the wages they are very high on average.

I wonder why there is no top division that has the best teams around the globe? (Or is it just me who cant see it.)

It really should exist, because some of the top divisions in some regions are a joke.

The AFLC is about as close as it gets to that I suppose.

As for whether this is the toughest ASE top div ever? It's hard to say - there have been plenty of cases before where all ten teams have been fully decked out with high quality players, but usually one or two teams either bot or have a firesale by the half way point. It's hard to see which of these ten might possibly do that though.

It will be interesting to follow.

There are some teams that have some age (31+ year old) players at key positions and it will be interesting to see if they fold and sell / fire them if the team suffers enough losses to be out of the title race. I guess that all teams have finances to take the 4-8 million blow it could cost if you are on a loosing streak, but these managers know that rebuilding costs and would like to save that money for some 4½ / 5 star talent youths while rebuilding.

I just hope that Div II.2 lets me through despite the knowledge that only one team in Div II.2 is rebuilding.

Good luck to all and go Swans!!!!

I have no idea about the toughest but it definitely looks incredibly even. 10 teams, none of which would shock you if they came through for the title and all of which would be disappointed in a relegation season.

While a rebuild for some teams would be tempting after a bad start it would all but ensure relegation.

Most of my season will be ensuring I can handle all (5) retiring players and hoping the first team can take care of business.

I keep hearing about rebuild if success is not guaranteed in div1...
...and i have never been there...but if i get there dont want to mess it up so...
...is it not possible to have a sustainable model that also provides the chance to succeed at the top? I guess it would involve double training, and consistent training of talent every season. It takes a lot of time to train a player for multiple positions, but my math suggests it is possible to do if about 50% of the starters play at double positions, but they are learning a 2nd position by playing friendly.
Continue on that, about half the players with high wages would play on 1 position, other half play at 2 positions, and there would be some other players on low wage learning the ropes. My math suggests that a player could play 1 position at about age 22, and could play 2 positons by about age 25. (assuming the team uses only the friendlies to increase BPOS of developmental players.)
Please let me know if something is wrong with my math or logic, and why it is not used at the top.

For me there are only some positions where it makes sense to play both ways because of the training. Defensive line and offensive line are the obvious ones because in a way it makes the training easier.

Quarterback/Linebacker or Safety kind of makes sense because it's the addition of tackling only really, but you'll need a QB with decent physicals.

Running back/STCB - This is an obvious one

Wide receiver/Kick Returner

Corner Back/Gunner

Cornerback/Wide Receiver some people will say is possible, I agree but it would require very high teamwork players to do it before they are too old.
