Westside Wildcats
Last season: 17-1
The reigning league and cup champions have shed a few big name starters, but in keeping with their NT QB factory reputation, Toby Enright takes over from the legendary Leslie under centre. The defense looks at strong as ever, and is stacked with NT talent as usual. Even though they have lost a few key players, they have a solid training program in place and still look like the team to beat, as has been the case for the last few seasons.

Blacktown Behemoths
Last season: 15-3
The Behemoths are in a lot of financial trouble and the threat of bothood looms large over the two-time TD champs. Gone are a lot of the big names, however they still have their QB and at least one quality receiver. Whether they decide to remain competitive or tank their way back to division II in order to survive remains to be seen. They are in the AFLC but in a stroke of awful luck for them (and their opponents) they have 5 low-paying home games.

Parramatta Pigs
Last season: 15-3
The Pigs have made some improvements to their anaemic offense and had the league's stingiest defense in season 28. While they have been one of the top 3 teams for some time, they have never been serious challengers. With the retirements and roster upheaval at other teams, are they now?

Sydney Roosters
Last season: 12-6
The Roosters have embraced the run game since they arrived to TD in season 25, to the point where RB Waldo Lafrance is now the greatest RB the league has ever seen. The squad has ballooned in wages and they are going to be a handful for all opponents this season. Are they contenders? It's hard to tell but their 12-6 record last season was a team best and they should certainly not be ruled out.

Bathurst Bushrangers
Last season: 9-9
The Bushrangers appear to be completely recovered from their financial crisis from a few seasons back and are now fielding a million dollar team. They could still use an upgrade at QB but the rest of the offense is looking solid, especially the receiving corps. Long-time RB Brodie Brennan is now 8th all-time in rush yards and TDs. They are probably a few seasons away from challenging for the title but they will be tough.

Collingwood Magpies
Last season (as Victoria Chiefs): 7-11
Probably the biggest mover during the last season and off-season, the Magpies have assembled a squad of high-talent veterans and are suddenly in the conversation as genuine contenders. Easily their biggest signing is National team QB and Wildcats legend Bret Leslie, though at age 32 does he still have the magic touch? Another issue that could plague them early on is team chemistry, but if they can keep the squad intact for a whole season they could be primed for a deep cup run.

Magic Suns
Last season: 7-11
The Suns have the talent, but setting line-ups has been a recurring problem that has let them down. Some young guys on the roster commanding big wages suggest there may be some one-skilling going on as well. Fix these two issues and this team could be one of the contenders for the title in a season or two.

I guess we'll find out where we stand next week with Pigs vs Cats happening early on - and you'll take the top spot (if only briefly) with another bot bash.

No picks by anyone - the drought continues.

Win or lose, this has been a cracking contest

Weird contest. A couple of red zone stops resulting in FGs meant the pigs were falling far behind. And a couple of intercepts thrown by cats got it close again for the photo finish.

The weird part for me was that the QB all but ignored the TE until the 2nd half, and instead kept targeting the same receiver, connecting with him 24 times in the end. The other two receiving options caught 8 passes between them.

I was passing down the middle for this game as well.

It's probably safe to rule the Pigs out as contenders now

Oh and third downs. So, so bad when it comes to trying to stop a Cats third down conversion.

Even though someone had to lose. It was a cracking seesaw battle that our division hasn't seen in many seasons. Each team got some lucky breaks, and each team had equal opportunity to get the win. OT games don't come that close.

I did note though that both defenses just layed down and both the offenses scored at will with 20 minutes to go.

Lots of the season to go, I wouldn't throw the contender card in the bin just yet.

Haha I was thinking about the return leg at J Anderson when I wrote that. That is a guaranteed L for sure

I think Blacktown deserve some kind of acknowledgement too, as they have somehow started 2-0 with their severely depleted squad. Dominant vs the Roosters yesterday. I actually expected them to lose. The next few financial updates are going to test them though. Going to require some Houdini-esque abilities to keep their team together without going under.

Also dying to see how this Magpie team fares vs real competition. There are some big-time players on that roster. It's a nice change to not be able to predict exactly how we all finish before the season starts. You're right: it has been a while.
