I have often wondered what the true value of the "Blocking" skill is for a defensive player. I seem to remember reading a few years ago that the admins originally intended "Blocking" to apply to defending as an offensive player (such as OL, RB, TE blocking the defense). However, it was also used as a secondary skill for certain defensive positions like CB, FS, and LB "defending/blocking" the pass.

Has anyone ever seen any truth to this or is the "Blocking" skill useless for a defensive player?

Interesting to see both sides of this debate, especially if anyone has any data.

I have defensive players with and without blocking.
I don't notice any obvious difference in their match stats (game BPOS).
To be honest that doesn't mean much because I wouldn't expect to be able to see minor effects on the match stats from my data. Plus it could have a positive effect for some actions but not be reflected in the match stats.

I wouldn't expect to see a change in the end of game BPOS. I would expect to see it in performance results.

For example: I have run tests on RBs with almost identical skills, except for the 1 difference being that one had a high Footwork and 1 had low Footwork and the RB with high Footwork skills performed noticeably better consistently. Even though Footwork is not necessarily a primary skill.

I am looking for a similar metric from the defense and Blocking, if possible.

I have started to notice there are skill sets for each position that are factored into the game more heavily than the devs have admitted. I suspect Blocking is one of them for certain defensive positions, but I have no way to quantify it yet.

Simple answer is NO, not needed. Admins have indicated that every player uses 3-5 skills for each position. I would suggest that blocking would not fall in the top 5 for any defensive positions. Exception CB, if you have them playing STCB, they will need blocking. List your top 5 skills for every position and if you think blocking makes the cut, then train it up

But I do remember that the admins said blocking was used as a skill for defensive players, but I agree that it would not be one of the 5 skills needed for a defensive player.

I can not do any testing since only my DL have blocking at the same level as their defensive skills.

I also remember the admins stating that, but I always felt like they used these opportunities to confuse the issue............a CB would need blocking, if they play this game at the STCB position. They are a defensive player, so it's fair to say that blocking is used as a skill for a defensive player. The admins goal has always been to keep it somewhat vague, while still presenting some information to keep the masses guessing. If they wanted us to know everything, they would of course lay it all out there, but their objective was clearly to leave it up to every manager to come up with their best conclusions and give it a go. My own thoughts are that when I select 5 skills for my defensive players, blocking fails to make the top 5. This of course is just my opinion.

SrednaD hits my point exactly because the admins have said that blocking is a defensive skill but without much additional information. However, as Gatr pointed out, the admins have also been very vague, which is why I am suspicious about Blocking actually having a larger affect on certain Defensive positions than is advertised by the Admins. My suspicions are indirect as I have noticed over the past few years (maybe about 10 seasons) that defensive players with higher Blocking seem to be more overall effective than those with low blocking.

I could be completely wrong, but this is just my own interpretation of what I believe I have witnessed over a period of time.
