Over the years I have tried numerous defensive formations in this game. One formation that I have not attempted is the 5 DL- 4LB - 2 CB formation without using a Safety. I am curious if anyone uses this formation and how you think it performs as compared to a 5 DL - 3 LB - 2 CB - 1 Safety for example?
I know the SS/FS serve as last line of zone defense against the run and pass, but if there is an extra LB, wouldn't the game engine just choose a MLB instead of the SS/FS in the zone?
Curious to see what the community thinks. I am beginning to wonder if the Safety position is virtually useless in this game engine?

Interesting question. I think it is clear that against the pass the 2nd line of defence are SS/FS/MLB (apart from SS/C). I think against the run, MLBs are in the 2nd line while SS/FS are in the 3rd line. So, if there are no safeties, the RB could break just two tackles to get a TD. I will look for matches with no SS/FS to confirm this.
CBs are basically useless: they could replaced by LBOs as 1st line of defence against the pass, and they don't play against the run
EDIT: I found a match with no SS/FS and many rush TDs with two missed tackles

That is very interesting. I looked at that match and it was clear that having no safety appeared to affect the run defense.
