Relegation no surprise after we were forced to blow up the squad midway through the season to stay afloat. Stadium destruction comes next and then a rebuild..... hoping to be back in the Top Div at some point but unlikely to be immediate

Took such a beating today I thought I'd accidentally played my Bpos team. At the season halfway point I thought I'd play a defence with no cornerbacks until someone made me regret it, and today might be that day.

Nevermind though. We've avoided the drop, which is better than I was expecting after the absolute pasting Tom gave us on week 1!

Yes, I've been watching it a lot lately. What's the reason for not playing with cornerbacks?... If I may say.

Honestly, I'd seen a few teams doing the same (I guessed because the run game still seems to be dominant and few teams are passing) and thought it was worth a try.

Thinking it over, Maroon have been spanking teams all season and the points they scored yesterday isn't out of the ordinary. We were never winning that game but my awful offence is the reason we lost so badly.

Right now I'm none the wiser - it doesn't help that I look at stats for games where teams are passing against "normal" defense formations and the CBs don't seem to be doing very much.

I dont think it has anything to do with your cornerbacks mate, i have won a couple of world cups and iron bowls playing without cornerbacks against teams who where using a passing offence.

I dont think the game engine distinguishes between the position and distance of the defensive players from the receiving player when taking in to account the probability and success rate of the play. If the game engine decides the wide receiver left will be targeted for the pass it then chooses a couple of defensive players to deal with the play, most likely your outside linebacker and/or free safety if your not using cornerbacks.

If my linebackers are better than my cornerbacks ill play with all linebackers and no cornerback, if i only have one good cornerback ill play with just one and use an outside linebacker on the other side.
The same can be said for defending the run it doesn't matter if you use 5 linebackers to try and stifle the space and stop the run because the game will choose a couple of linebackers and/or your strong safety and work out the success probability based on the stats of those players vs the running back stats of the other team.

Disclaimer: This could of course all be total bollocks and is just an opinion.

This is some of the best non-bollocks, I have read in here. If you take a step back and look at the passing game (when it was the go-to option some years ago), defence would only cover one side with one CB even though the offense would line up with two WR's. This makes me conclude that the engine processes the play as written in the FAQ.

FAQ wrote:

Quarteback decides on the passing game, the first calculations decide how well he is protected by his linemen against the opponent's linemen and linebackers. If the engine sees the quarteback protected, the passing play is initiated and the receiver and his covers come into play.

and:

So even more simpler description of the game flow would be : Quarterback decides next play (based also on your tactical decisions) -> Area calculations of the relevant pitch regions -> action simulation using players involved -> outcome -> commentary -> next play ...

So since the explanation does not state who is covering who (CB's on WR's, LB's on TE's and so on), then the engine takes the closest player, being a linebacker or safety.

Also, the mention of "pitch regions" clearly state that the defensive coverage is zone coverage. Allthough you could have defensive formation where a single middle linebacker is covering the whole side of the field while the other linebackers and defensive backs are crowding the other side.

So last season started badly with a pasting at home by the Hoops.

This season we're away to the Maroon.

Oof!

Edinburgh Maroon with a collector's item - a second loss in a row for them (due to bot offence). They've lost only 22 times in the previous 7 league seasons, which they've all won, so clearly they felt they were being a bit selfish, and decided to give someone else a sniff at the title.
