Why is this the case? 40 yards is still a huge distance away from the End Zone...

Because, if you punt you gain about 10 yards in field position.
Punting so far has little to do with the punting skill, so instead of gaining those 10 yards, it maybe makes more sense trying to get a first down.Last edited on 2008-10-11 at 14:02
