Funky Formations!

Hi.

I played a league match on Saturday against the Big Baboons - who have been in Division III for a long time. I reckoned it was a game I would probably lose so I decided to experiment with my Offensive formation.

Ever since I started this game, I have always, always played the normal 5 down linemen - 1 x C, 2 x G and 2 x T. Then I looked at what Serbia did to beat the USA in the last world cup (Serbia - who were not that far ahead of us!) and did this:

Took out my RT, put in an extra WR on the right and moved my blocking FB to the right for more pass protection. My QB got sacked twice and threw one INT - but then he can be a bit Favre-like when it comes to protecting the football anyway, as Celt67 found out in our recent game! He also went 30 for 58 for almost 500 yards and completed at least three passes to 5 different players - and I won!

This was only one game and could just have been a fluke against a very good team - but I suppose my point is that, with this engine at least, experimenting with funky formations can produce results!

Anyone else have odd formations they have used?

I like my standard formations personally. I did try a formation recently though where I took out my starting LT and replaced him with a FB. The Good: Didn't concede any sacks. The Bad: Didn't score any points against a newish team.

The Serbian national team however had very good success running a formation that only had interior linemen (C, RG, LG) on the O-Line. So you can gain some success with the funky formations.

My only worry with running strange formations is that if you are not blessed with a big squad, with good players, then it could bite you in the arse when the new engine comes in and could possible take away the ability to run these formations (or at least their effectiveness).

I agree completely with you - we have no idea what the new engine will do or what effect it will have. I am also inclined to stick with more traditional formations normally.

Sometimes, however, I think it can work well to be aggressive or experimental in games you think you're not likely to win - like going for as many fourth downs as the engine will allow or using strange formations.
