Is there a tutorial or manual that I'm missing? There doesn't seem to be a lot of information readily available beyond trial and error or educated guessing for how things work.

Bottom of the screen, see the Help/FAQ also the Game rules and of course the community forums do have a lot of information, however you have to manually search thru the topics and entries for seeking good info
