Bad luck mate. Out played them in the second half. But only 9 points to show for it. Couldn't finish drives.

Like I just edited in, I probably should have been more aggro with my 4th down settings, but it's a tough one to judge. You look stupid if you try it on a 4th and 3 while you're ahead on the 30 yard line, you look stupid if it doesn't work, or you look stupid when we keep pinging in short field goals instead of going for it when you're behind. Such is the life of limited settings I guess, and with the way the game turned out with all the small sub 10 yard passes, the conservative route made me look stupid. Not really concerned about image, but having one of those "what ifs" even if it was a bit of a 50/50 is a bit annoying. Not sure it would have entirely made up the difference though regardless, but super disappointing result.

Yeah, bad luck.

I agree about the FG thing - my team only goes for FGs when the engine forces it i.e inside 30 and more than 5 yds to go.

I feel a little guilty about my urging you to drop Morton - I never realized how much of a drop the next player was - Arrowsmith's footwork and tacticals stink. I believe the footwork factor is more important.

I see the dilemma here with Morton being far and away our best OLmen IF the stam 20 thing doesn't kick in. But that's the big IF isn't it.

Anyway, another good run for us. I am going to push my man Hooper for a spot next season - I might bring his blocking up to 18 or 19. FWIW, my spreadsheet says that even right now he'd be the 5th best OLman on the Aus team (or 4th best wthout Morton).

Anyway, well done Daudy - Spain played well!

I dont believe it makes you look anything. Even if you went for it, and somehow were 3 for 3 on fourth downs. We would've still been 7 points down. Defense and incomplete passes killed us today. But it is Espana, they are a top 4 team. No way we should've been facing them in the 1/4s.

Ryan Hooper
5* OL, 5* EXP
Con = 14
INT = 6
Spd = 14
STR = 18
Stam = 16
Ag/Blk/Ftwk = 15
Pos/Vis = 13

I know he's only got 18 STR but the 5* BPOS makes up for that imo.

What does he need to be a starter on the Aus team?

18 Blk?

19 Blk?

Dunno. With 18 STR, many others beat him out.

There are others with 19 STR and 4.5 BPOS, that regularly play at 5.0 level. So BPOS isn't really a shining light.

I wouldn't disclude him completely. But there are a few 19 and 20 STR guys not currently on the national team.

But to answer your question. Most starters have 18 blocking. So if you wanna make up for some missing strength, then get extra blocking. Aim for 19.

Shame he never got trialled as a TE or LB in his early years.

What's everyone's thoughts on Spd, ftwk, INT and tacticals for OL?

STR, Ag, Stam and blk are all clearly important.

I see ftwk as important for OL and DL, probably similar to Ag. And tacticals of secondary importance but not discarded altogether.

INT might be used but imo is more important for other positions in general so most OL probably wont have high INT.

INT is not important for OL.

Footwork I'm 50-50 on. To be honest, I don't think it does much. But it gets a look at anyways.

Tacticals I'm doubtful on also.

Has there ever been any talk on whether a high INT C might have an overall benefit to an OLine (like a captain of the line)?

Morton, who's our 2nd most INT OL behind Johnson, might work well at C. Even when he has a stam 20 game it mightn't matter. But if we suddenly get a lot of MLB pressues/sacks then we just cut him?

I like footwork and tacticals on my OLine, but honestly, I feel it's something we should all have on the Oline anyway due to the lack of other things to train. I don't really think INT has any effect on the line, but historically with the NT we've always fielded a high INT guy at C anyway. Roughead is 20 Int, Johnson is 19, and those guys (particularly Roughead) have been the guys playing the majority of C. So regardless of effect, we should have been covered there.

Pressures/sacks have been really hard to judge to be honest. Like that Austrian solo DE in the two qualifying games that gave Johnson a hard time was actually a fairly middle range build with 16/16 physicals. On paper I think Johnson should have won that contest most times, but both times was given a run around. Johnson has the best physicals in the entire team (tied with Kiel with a total of 39), equal highest OL primaries (including agility), plenty of footwork (17), and 3rd best tacticals but was blitzed by a 16/16 DE with 18 footwork, 17 tackling, and nothing else (inc. low agility).

This game vs Spain had really nice ratings for the OL and could have been the FB bottling it in, or the TEs not having that high blocking, but I have a few doubts on both (given past events). Maybe I should have just played Johnson as OT due to paper stats (despite the Austrian games). I think next cycle Aisake Hughes will be better, and James Wood could be a real shout (he'd be auto OT starter as is now if it weren't for that consistency). If not, Johnson will still be around, but outside that... we have a bunch of OG types with lowish speed high strength, but not a lot of guys with 'complete' physicals which we like to put at OT. Anyway, whatever it was that was causing a lot of incompletions (including pressures/sacks) it apparently wasn't (just) Morton.
